Yes, I was that kid with the weed whacker haircut, carrying a comic book, and/or MAD magazine. I loved comic books! They were my first introduction to art.
Growing up in the sixties I was all about cartoons, and comics. I could spend all day drawing from comic books. Batman, and Superman were my introduction to super hero’s.
Soon I knew when all the new Marvel comics would hit the comic rack, and bought all my favorites with paper route money.
James Bama‘s Doc Savage. Another paperback cover that had me collecting the whole series. Boris Valejo’s cover work on Tarzan did the same thing though Jeff Jones was my favorite Tarzan artist.
Frank Frazetta. I remember the first time I saw his art on a “Conan The Barbarian“ paperback book cover. I had to have the whole series. I tore into them like a bag of Lay’s Potato Chips. I also became a fan of Robert E. Howard. Frazetta became one of my earliest, and strongest influences.
In creating Conan he created a world to inspire many artists including myself. I spent many hours inspired by artists like Frank Frazetta, Jeff Jones, and countless others. His writing opened up another world to me.
Another huge influence early in my youth was Jeff Jones. He was one of my favorite Tarzan artist’s. Even Frank Frazetta was highly impressed by his art! He still remains one of my favorites today.
Norman Rockwell was probably the greatest illustrator of our time. His paintings were timeless. I remember thinking how much life they had. How over the top realistic they looked. I never got tired of his artwork.
N. C. Wyeth’s Pirates leapt off the page when he illustrated Treasure Island!
Howard Pyle was the teacher of N. C. Wyeth. Need I say more?
Cowboy’s are everything to a young boy. From the TV, to wagon wheel bunk beds, printed sheets, and blankets. Fredrick Remington, and James Bama were two of the best Western painters!
In the 80’s while exploring a lab at Y-12 National Security on the midnight shift I ran across a Louis Lamour paperback called “Lando.” I loved it, and it made me revisit a title by Robert E. Howard called “Heros of Bear Creek.” It became one of my favorite westerns!
MAD had some of the best illustrator’s ever! Mort Drucker… Jack Davis… Wally Wood… Will Elder… Harvey Kurtzman… the list goes on.
Speaking of Harvey Kurtzman, and Will Elder, they went on to create a cartoon for Playboy Magazine. Jack Davis, and even Frank Frazetta worked on the iconic magazine! You might remember it. “Little Annie Fanny.” Every red blooded American boy probably knows who I’m talking about.
And on to my teenage years… UNDER GROUND COMICS. These years were spent in a fog… of reefer smoke. I loved Robert Crumb, but Gilbert Shelton was the creator of my favorite comic. The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers!
Homage to my favorite cartoon, and comic characters as a kid.
